As we all know, construction equipment is a huge expense but often an absolute necessity to get what you want done effectively and efficiently. If you are in a position where renting is too costly, and you don’t use it often enough to buy new equipment, quality used equipment can be a great solution. Research shows that new construction equipment depreciated up to 40% in the first 2 to 3 years. So, buying used equipment eliminates depreciation loss. And lastly, when shopping for used equipment, you can easily compare the different brands and features that come with each.

Some of the major issues with used equipment range from availability to logistical deliverability. You can’t get it fast enough or you just can’t get it to your location because it is too large or there is no infrastructure available. Your loan interest rate can be high on used, so adding it to your cost may push that option out of the running. Remember it is used and may need some tweaking to get it back to where you need it. This can get costly quickly and is hard to evaluate until you get it out and start using it.

When inspecting, keep this checklist in mind:

  • Tires – Are they worn or cracked?

  • Metal Pieces  - Are their bends, or signs of repair like large welded sections?

  • General Operation – Be sure to test drive the machine to ensure there are no strange ignition sounds. Does the machine emit unusual smoke?

  • Battery - Is it corroded or damaged?

  • Hydraulics – Do the hydraulic hoses or tilt cylinders show signs of leakage?

Separately, make sure there is a machine maintenance log and read it carefully. If there is not one, that is a serious red flag. Most importantly, if you are buying from a reseller, vet them well. Do they have resources, and do they have a systematic evaluation process like a 5 Star Check List?
